The case against shark

Shark is a fish.

  1. Older than trees.Sharks were swimming more than 400 million years ago, before there was a single tree on land.
  2. No bones. Its whole skeleton is cartilage, like the tip of your nose. Not a whale, not a mammal: a fish.
  3. No fur, ever.Four hundred million years, and not one of them grew a coat.

So we make the opposite of shark. And, to be safe, one shark.

Know your enemy.

A silver table tree on a Gothic domed foot, hung with fossil shark teeth in tan, gray and black

The thirty-first of October

All Hallows.

Everything else about tonight is pretending to be dead. This is having them over.

A table for one night of the year. A silver tree hung with three hundred fossil shark teeth, a place in bone china for each person who isn’t coming, a candle poured to the length of your night, and a bronze turnip for the step outside. It is sold one place at a time, because that is how you will need it.
